This blog has three parts, and exercises with answers.
For the first part, I will write the definition, structure, linguistic elements and examples of News Items.
For the second paragraph, I will write how to analyze of news items.
And the last paragraph, I will write the conclusion and questions with answers.
So, let's begin!!
PART 1 NEWS ITEM
Definition
The news item is the text that resembles news, is based on reality, and is reliable. And usually always published every day with the latest events.
The purpose of this news item is to provide information to readers.
Structure
1. Play events
This section is also known as a newsworthy event. This section is the part that tells or contains news about the main event or event which is usually written in the form of a summary (summary).
2. Background events
This part, which is often referred to as Elaboration, is the part that tells the background of the event or incident, who was involved, and the location of the incident.
3. Source
The last part is the source, which tells about comments, witnesses to events, expert opinions, and so on regarding the events or events that are reported.
In each type of text in English, there are linguistic characteristics that can distinguish it from other types of text. The most prominent feature of news item text is its concise and concise language.
Linguistic Elements
* Brief information contained in the headline
* Focus on an incident
* Dominant uses saying verbs, such as reported, quoted, said, preached, and so on.
* Generally use action verbs, which are verbs that show activity
* Often use auxiliary verbs that show time and place
In a news item to analyze a text, we need 5W + 1H. That is :
• Who is involved?
For "Who" this refers to who was involved, or who did it.
• When is it happening?
For "When" refers to the day and date of the incident.
• Where is this happening?
For "Where" refers to the scene.
• What's happening?
To "What" refers to a person, event or thing.
• Why is it happening?
For "Why" refers to the process of problem-solving, cause and effect, and reasons.
• How is this happening?
For "How" the reference is almost the same as why.
ANALYZING PARAGRAPH
Let's go to the text section.
The first paragraph relates to the news title or the main elements of the news. We can look at the first sentence for the main idea.
Then for the second paragraph is the background related to the first paragraph. Usually, we find out who was involved, and how it happened.
For the last paragraph, this paragraph is a comment from a witness or person involved.
For clarity, I will include an example text for analysis.
I use this photo before for example of the news item, and now we will analyze this photo.
First Paragraph is the Main Event of the news and relates to the news title. Why? Because the first paragraph will explain details to the second or next paragraph.
The headline might: David Beckham and his wife are going to court
In the second or the next paragraph, we know that the text has 5W and 1H. You find out yourself.
The last paragraph is the comment.
We can see the comment of David Beckham about His marriage life.
